Guruji satsang - attachment vs mother love
Gurudev, what is the difference between Moha (attachment) and Mamtaa (a mother’s love)?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:
See, a mother’s love is permanent, it never goes away. What is attachment? When (a mother’s) love makes us blind, then that is attachment.
Suppose a mother’s son is not qualified to become the Chief Minister of a state, and the son also does not want to become the Chief Minister, but the mother forces the son to become the Chief Minister because she is unable to recognize that he is not the right person for the job, then this is attachment.
What King Dhritarashtra felt towards his son Duryodhana was attachment. On the other hand, the love of Mother Yashoda towards Lord Krishna was nothing but purely a mother’s love for her child.
Attachment gives you misery because it blinds you. When you get entangled in attachment, you overlook the person’s true capability and what they deserve. Mamtaa means having the feeling of 'Mine'. So, your motherly love should expand and it should be for everyone else.
Lord Krishna says in the Gita, 'Yes, I do have attachment also, but it is equal towards all beings'. Samo 'ham sarva-bhuteshu na me dveshyo 'sti na priyah. Ye bhajanti tu mam bhaktya mayi te teshu cha-api aham'. (9.29)
This is a very unique quality and only Lord Krishna can speak like this. A normal person can get very attached to one person. But when a person says, 'I have that same strong attachment towards all beings', then that is unique. So Lord Krishna presents attachment also in a positive way.

Guruji satsang - emotions
Free yourself from the storm of emotions ~ Sri Sri
Life is found to be caught up in storms so very often. And you are not yourself when you are in a storm. You don’t know what to do. At those moments all your spiritual practices, concepts, ideas and ideals fall apart. Your devotion, your love and all the beautiful things you cherish in your life, simply don’t seem to be there or mean anything. You are under the influence of a big storm. A whirlwind rises in you and throws you off balance.
What do you do? Nothing is helpful. You sit, close your eyes and try to meditate. But the mind is all over the place. You feel as though you are in a burning furnace, and you don’t know how to put the fire out. And the more effort you make to cool it down, and put it out, the more the fire burns, the more the restlessness and agitation increase. You are yourself only between the storms. How many storms rise in your life, and how frequently do they rise?
The less frequent they are, the more you are yourself. At those moments you are happy; you are settled. You are calm. Just think of those moments of intense restlessness, agitation and feverishness. The breath becomes heavier. The body becomes unbearable. You are not at all aware of the mind. But that is not what you are. You get a glimpse of the clearness of yourself between two storms. But life seems to be like the ocean – wave after wave lashing at you, one after another.
This is the only problem. This is the only basic problem in the universe. There is no other problem. You can attach it to one thousand causes or reasons, but the problem is how to free your life from this storm which has gripped it.
The first thing to do is to become aware of this. At that moment, the storm will subside. First, stop regretting things. For no reason, there is turmoil in the mind. When your mind cools down and you experience that inner cool, soft and delicate aspect of yourself, there is a big relief.
No one storm can be there all the time. It is impossible. It comes and subsides.
Your mind is like a wind – a whirlwind, subsiding and cooling down. That is your true nature. That is love. You have been resisting, restless, all this time. Now you see it is there. Okay, so let it be there. It is a part of nature. The storm is also a part of nature. Stop resisting the storm. Take it, gulp it in its totality; go deep into it and you will see it is nothing. It is just created out of yourself, your mind and your consciousness. In that aspect of you, you are your Self.
Know that there is a power, some power, someone, who is really caring for you.
Not just someone there is only One in the whole universe. That One in the universe is caring and taking care of you. You can relax, rest and be peaceful.
There cannot be an ocean without waves. Every event touches life somewhere on its surface. It creates movement. Take all that comes with both your hands. Don’t say that it is impossible or not possible for you. This thought of something being not possible means that you are resisting. This is making the storms stay for long periods. Stand there with your arms open. Say, ‘Whatever storms come, let them, I’m here.’ You grow out of them. You become bigger.
Tell yourself:
“Come what may, there is nothing that can destroy me. It may be excruciatingly painful, but it doesn’t matter. It still cannot destroy or kill me. I am here. I am much, much bigger than all these emotions, commotions or waves. They all rise inside me, in me, and in no way can they destroy me. I will let them be.”
So when a storm arises, just be with it. Do not try to get rid of the storm. Be with it; go into it. And, of course, you have your meditation and spiritual practices to help purify your whole system. It’s such a blessing.

Guruji satsang - partner jealous
Gurudev, why do people become jealous about their partners or friends whom they love so much?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:
Usually when we love something, we want to possess it. If you appreciate a painting, you want to buy it and keep it in your home. You find a beautiful garment, and although you know you will wear it only a couple of times, you buy it and put it in the closet.
You have known only one way of loving — love it, possess it and forget it. When you try to possess love, you rob it of its beauty, and then that same love gives you pain.
Whoever you love, you try to dictate terms to them. In a very subtle way you try to rule them. And whatever you try to control turns ugly.
You have never loved someone and not tried to possess them.
It begins in childhood. When the second baby comes, the first baby wants all the attention. “Why did you bring this baby home? Give it away.” Many children say,”You belong to me and me alone.” It is a deep samskara, a deep impression, this fear of losing our place in the heart of someone we love.
First comes attraction.
Have you noticed this? If you simply get whatever you are attracted to — just like that, quickly — you do not develop love for it. A longing must arise. That leads to love. But love brings the fear of loss. Yet, a love which has the fear of loss does not blossom. It leads you to other ugly sensations and feelings. Jealousy comes. There is someone you love very much — a friend, a boyfriend, a girlfriend — but his or her attention is on someone else.
See what is happening in your stomach — it is churning. You try all sorts of gimmicks to deny what is happening within you. Much ugliness arises because there is fear of loss. You never love something that is big, that is enormous because you have not yet become enormous yourself. And as long as you stay very small, there is no joy, there is no happiness, there is no peace. Joy is expansion, becoming big in your heart. This can only happen in a situation where you are very much in love, but you cannot possess what you love.

Guruji satsang - I am blessed
*24. Feel That "I Am Blessed"*
There is so much talk about success. Have you ever thought what success is? Success is simply ignorance about one's capabilities. Success is ignorance about the power of the self because you assume you can do only this much. If there are obstacles, you are clear about your objective.
With a calm and serene mind, think of many possibilities. Know that failures are stepping stones for greater success. Actually, there are no failures in life. All the seeming failures are only stepping stones for greater success. If you feel the obstacle is too much, deep prayer can work miracles.
The feeling that I am blessed can help you overcome any failure. Once you realise that you are blessed, than all the complaints disappear, all the grumbling disappears, all the insecurities disappears, a sense of not being loved disappears, wanting love disappears.
Ego is always ambitious and wants to do tough jobs like climbing Mount Everest whereas in a simple act like watching a butterfly, watering a garden, watching the birds or the sky, can bring deep relaxation and relaxation connects you with your source.
Seemingly trivial actions open a new dimension and bring in immense peace and rest. Just come out of your little shell and feel free. There is a saying - Behind every successful man is a women. I will modify this - Behind every success there is the divine saying, I am behind you.

Guruji satsang - stress
🌷5 Things You Need to Know About Stress 🌷
(From Wisdom post of Sri Sri)
There is a beautiful human being inside everyone. What makes one different is the stress that covers the beauty. When the stress is gone, we become our original selves. In this article, Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar speaks on the 5 things we need to know about stress.
1.Too much to do, too little time, and no energy – that’s what the definition of stress is. When you want to do too much and you have neither energy nor time, you get stressed.
2. Secondly, remember you have faced many challenges in the past and you have overcome them all. So, have this confidence that I can handle this challenge as well.
3. Then you must also know that there’s nothing more important in life than life itself. If you are alive, then everything else is. If you are alive, then there is business. If you are alive, then relationships. If you are alive, then there is fame or whatever you wish for. Don’t put life at risk to get these other things. You must give more importance to life itself.
4. Why do you do anything that you do? It is because you want to be happy. And if you achieve something at the cost of happiness, it is worth nothing at all. You achieved what you wanted but you lost happiness, then that achievement is null and void. So you must keep this in mind.
5. Things happen through a different law in the Universe. You might have noticed that you had been very good to people and still there were people who suddenly became your enemies. Your friends became your enemies. And the opposite happens too: someone whom you have not done any big favor for, they help you when you really need it. So friendship or animosity happens through some special law of the Universe, and it is called karma.
When your times are good, your worst enemy behaves as a friend, and when your time is bad, then your best friend behaves like an enemy. So, understand things from a bigger dimension.

Guruji satsang - Perfection
Gurudev SriSri RaviShankar :
“If you find any imperfection in another, don’t get frustrated and criticize them, instead volunteer to help them grow!
There are some very talented people in the world, but they too have some negative points. Now, if you look only at the minus points, their talents become invisible. When you are looking for perfection everywhere around, I tell you, you forget to see the imperfection inside of you. You want everything to be perfect, but are you perfect? You have to look for that.
When you gain perfection at something, you will stop pointing out imperfections and you will stop getting frustrated about the imperfections of others, and instead contribute to their growth – to help them become perfect.
Everyone has flaws, and everyone has some very good qualities as well. But if you see only flaws, then you will miss out on their plus points. Nobody can become perfect overnight. It is a gradual process, and we need to encourage them to help them get there!”
Q. Gurudev, you are always in a hurry ?
Sri Sri : Yes, I am always in Hari.
'Being in a state of equanimity, and enduring whatever comes, whether it is hot or cold, good or bad, praise or criticism, is tapasya. Can you listen to an insult with the same equanimity as when you listen to compliments? That is tapasya.
Forbearing the opposites is called tapasya, and it is essential in life.
The extent to which we follow tapasya in life, to that extent we become stronger and stable.'
Guruji satsang - Asangoham
Q:Dear Gurudev, kindly explain the meaning of Asangoham (a phrase often chanted by Gurudev in the advanced course).
HH Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:
I am not this – that is what Asangoham means. For example, I am wearing the cloth, but I am not the cloth.
The body is mine but I am not the body. I am not the thoughts, I am not the mind. Like this you go on to negate one by one all the layers of identity. And finally when you ask, ‘Who am I?’ You will find nothing!
‘I am nothing, I am just the space.’ That is what Asangoham is.
Sangoham means being one with it. If I think I am my clothes, then that is a problem. I am beyond all these layers of existence.
If I think that I am my thoughts, my emotions, my sensations then I lose track of my vast nature. Therefore to reach the realization of our vastness we say, ‘I am not this and I am not this’, repeatedly.
(Gurudev sings)
Mano Budhyahankaar Chittani Naaham, Na Cha Shrotra Jihve Na Cha Ghraana netre Na Cha Vyoma Bhumir Na Tejo Na Vayuh, Chidananda Rupah Shivoham Shivoham
- From the Atmashtakam (By Adi Shankaracharya)
I am not the mind, intellect, memory or ego. I am not this, not this, not this.
This is the way of negating and going into that hollow and empty space. This Shiva Tattva is what I really am. This realization is what meditation is; that is Samadhi.

Guruji satsang - Ramayana
The significance of Ramayana ~ Sri Sri
The Ramayana is not just a story which happened long ago; it has a philosophical, spiritual significance and a deep truth in it.
The words ‘rays’ and ‘radiance’ come from the Sanskrit root word ‘ra’. ‘Ra’ means light, ‘Ma’ means within me, in my heart. So, Rama means the light within me. That which is radiant in every particle of the being is Rama.
Rama was born to Dasharath and Kousalya. Dasharath means ‘Ten Chariots’. The ten chariots symbolize the five sense organs and five organs of action. Kousalya means ‘skill’. The skillful rider of the ten chariots can give birth to Ram. When the ten are used skillfully, radiance is born within.
Rama was born in Ayodhya. Ayodhya means ‘a place where no war can happen’. When there is no conflict in our mind, then the radiance can dawn.
The Ramayana is not just a story which happened long ago; it has a philosophical, spiritual significance and a deep truth in it. It is said that the Ramayana is happening in your own body.
Your soul is Rama, your mind is Sita, your breath or life-force(prana) is Hanuman, your awareness is Laxmana and your ego is Ravana. When the mind was stolen by Ravana (the ego) then the soul got restless. Now the soul cannot reach the mind on its own, it has to take the help of the breath – the prana. With the help of the prana, the mind got reunited with the soul, and the ego vanished.

Guruji satsang - Prayer 🙏
Prayer is a vital tool to improve your life. It also nurtures values like integrity and honesty. Prayer happens in two situations, or in a combination of situations. When you feel grateful or when you feel utterly helpless. If you are not grateful and prayerful, you will be miserable. In either case your prayers will be answered.
What you can do, you do. What you cannot do, you pray for. It is said the divine dawns in you when you pray for it, when you sing for it. The divine is only waiting for we you to dig a little deeper into yourself. Because, it can then fill you with much more nectar.
Divine wants you to create more space in you. Cry from your soul for help. This is for those seekers who are weak. Those seekers who are strong with the power of knowledge can sing with that joy of what they have achieved.
The moment you sing in gratitude, in glory of the divine, it immediately dawns in you, and fills you up again. One type of people are grateful for all their growth. The other type are helpless and weak. Both will be helped. Spirituality is not same ritual, or doing something.
It is a very pleasant, uplifted state of being and seeing the whole world is all spirit or consciousness. Use prayer to bring integration your personality. Whatever you do, know that the higher power has the final say and it will always be the best.

Guruji satsang - Take out time for yourself
*Take Out Time For Yourself*
If for the whole day you are engaged in only gathering information, you do not take out time for yourself to think and reflect. A few quiet moments are sources for creativity.
Some time during the day, sit for a few minutes, get into the cave of your heart, eyes closed, and kick the world away like a ball. But, during the day be 100% attached to the work.
Eventually, you will be able to be both attached and detached. This is the skill of living, the art of living. Renunciation refills your energy. Creativity cannot happen only just through efforts. There is a beautiful story about Chhatrapati Shivaji.
At one time Shivaji became so frustrated about ruling his kingdom that he went to his guru Samarth Ramdas and told him that he is fed up and that he just wants to renounce everything. Ramdas told him that he can renounce everything.
Shivaji became so happy and relaxed at the very thought. Then Ramdas told him “Now I am the king and you are my servant. Will you do whatever I ask you to do?”
Shivaji - For you I am ready to do anything.
Ramdas - Very good. Will you run this country for me?
Shivaji - Yes, I will run the country for you. Total renunciation has brought zeal and enthusiasm in him. Creativity springs up when you are relaxed. You have to renounce all work you have done the whole day, only then can you rest in the night.
Though many times pain, struggle and frustration have brought out creativity in some people, these are not the only reasons for a person to be creative.
Millions of people in the world are struggling or frustrated, but they are not creative. So, taking out some time for yourself improves the quality of your life.

Guruji satsang - Life Struggles
Life Struggles
All our struggles in life is to know more. You are trying your level best to understand feelings and emotions, and you get into more and more confusion. This is what has happened with psychology today. It tries to explain to you why you fell like the way you are feeling.
The 'why' arises always when you are unhappy. You ask "Why this problem to me of all the people?" Nobody ever asked, "Why am I so happy?" You wanted to understand, "Why am I not feeling good?", or "Why am I angry?", or "Why is this not happening?"
The more you try to understand and try to dig in, you seem to understand less and less. The mystery deepens, an illusion comes as though "I know it". But that is for short while. We ourselves do not know and we try to explain others.
Stop your explanations, put you into a soup and also make other people more confused. You don't know what is happening in your mind. Mind is like a roller coaster. It's a crowd. Just be in the simple and innocent state of "I don't know". This life is a mystery, it's beautiful live it.
Living the mystery of life totally is joy. Becoming the mystery is divine. You are a mystery. When you see life in this context, clarity dawns in your mind and improves.
Guruji satsang - hate and emotions
The most intelligent thing to do is not to hate anybody because whomsoever you hate, you get those impressions embedded in you. A gardener is working in the garden. When you work in a garden, you will definitely get dirty.
Your gloves will get dirty, your hands will get dirty, and your clothes will get some mud splashes. But after you come inside and wash up, you don’t identify yourself with the mud that got splashed onto you while you were working in the garden, right?
In the same way, while we are in society, moving among people, the emotions of others get splashed onto our subtle mind and we start to identify with them. This is what becomes a problem. We identify, “Oh, this is my emotion - my anger and my greed”.
Whether the emotions are positive or negative, we identify with them and then we try to get rid of them. And it’s not an easy job. It’s like the gardener who thinks some mud that is on him will not go away.
For example, you’re peacefully working in your office. You have done your morning meditation and you feel good, but your boss is uptight. Suddenly, there is some problem that comes up and you get agitated. Someone else’s agitation has latched on to you and you think, “Oh, I am angry.”
The clever thing to do is to not identify yourself with the emotion that has nothing to do with you. You can realise, “I am different from the emotions. The emotions are different from me.

Guruji satsang - what to do to stay calm
Q: I am happy and calm now. What can I do to maintain this state throughout life?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:
Share it with more and more people. Joy or wisdom if not shared with others starts dwindling. Now this does not mean you go to others and start teaching them Bhastrika Pranayama, or the Sudarshan Kriya. Unless you get properly trained, you should not go about teaching meditation and these practices to others. This is why we had to put a quality control for Yoga in the country today. There is a QCI (Quality Control for India) body and the government has asked it to do something for Yoga also. It is because it is observed that people learn something from somewhere and then go around teaching it to others without proper training. Then when some unwanted or unexpected things happen it becomes a problem. There is a proverb in Sanskrit – “Yasya kasya tarur-mulam yena kenapi churnitam; yasmai kasmai pradaatavyam yatvaa-tatvaa bhavishyati” (From the Subhashita). It means that someone may bring the root of any tree, grind it into a fine powder and give it off as medicine to others. And something or the other may happen to the other person by taking that (untested) medicine. The same is what is happening with Yoga also these days. People practice Yoga for just a week and proclaim themselves to be Yoga instructors and teachers. There needs to be a proper quality system in place for Yoga also, and there should be levels or stages of training and certification. Until then, do not just go and train others. But you should always talk to other people about Yoga and bring more awareness about it. You should definitely inspire and encourage others for this.

Guruji satsang - Grace
How To Attract Grace Into My Life?
~ Sri Sri
Whenever there is victory, it is due to some grace. Whether it is victory in sports, in a lottery, in studies, in a competition, or in politics – all of it happens through grace alone. When a person forgets that and gets into ego, then it results in their downfall. So always remember that whenever and wherever there is victory, it is through grace.
What is Grace?
There is a commonly-used phrase – “God's Grace”. What does this mean?
Whenever you achieve something very significant that felt like it was beyond your capacity, which was worth having, but came to you not by your doing alone, that is Grace.
You feel, “I am not capable or qualified for this, yet I got this”.
When you recognize the Grace in your life, you feel very grateful, because you feel you have been bestowed with things that you were not worthy of. And this is the language of a wise person. A wise person never says, "Oh, I earned it. This is my right". When you think it is your right, you are getting what you got because of your right – there is no gratitude. Gratefulness is there when you feel that you got this not by your effort but because it was bestowed on you by Grace, as a gift. That brings gratefulness.
What is the Cause of Grace?
Grace is causeless and unmerited. It is not obtained through some merit or cause. Grace is received without any conditions. It is not that only after doing something you will receive Grace. If so, then that is not Grace – that is business. You are blessed with Grace just like that – without any conditions whatsoever. Grace is always there, just become aware of it and know that you are being showered with Grace.
Grace is something that can go inside even a closed purse. You don’t need to pay money to receive Grace. And if someone tells you that Grace will come to you only by opening your purse and giving money, then know that something is wrong for sure. God always blesses you in abundance. You need not pay money to receive it.
How Do I Attract More Grace in My Life?
The more grateful we become, the more we experience Grace in life. A mind that is complaining all the time cannot experience Grace. But one who is thankful and contented experiences more Grace in life.
We say that we want blessings and Grace. Blessings are available in plenty, but if your vessel is small, then what to do?
If you bring a tea cup and say, “Give me two liters of milk in this”, how can two liters of milk fit in the little cup? The cup is small and you are asking for too much. You need to bring a vessel with the capacity of three liters and then I can give you two liter or three liter, whatever you want.
So, you must remember that whatever you get is your capacity, and if you want to get more, then you must expand your capacity. When your capacity increases, more will definitely come to you.
How Do I Expand My Capacity to Receive More Grace?
Just having the intention to increase one’s capacity itself does half the job.
Be natural, simple, and humble. Humility from within naturally increases one’s capacity.
Meditation, spiritual practices, service to society and knowledge.
Shatt Sampatti (the Six Wealths or Six-fold Virtues)
Sama (calmness of mind)
Dama (self-control or restraint of the senses)
Uparati (satiety)
Titiksha (power of endurance)
Shraddha (faith)
Samadhana (equanimity or one-pointedness of the mind)
This is what you must focus on increasing more in your life. By enhancing these virtues, your capacity to receive blessings will increase.

Guruji satsang - relationship
Secrets to a Successful Relationship
~ Sri Sri
What happens when you fall in love? After a while, the soap opera begins, you start demanding. When you start demanding, the love diminishes. The joy fades away.
So then you say, “Oh I have made a mistake in this relationship.” Then there’s struggle and pain to get out of that relationship. After getting out of it, you get into one more; and the same story repeats.
Love is essential in relationships, not mere attraction. In love, there is submission. This is the difference between love and attraction. Though attraction forms the first step, you cannot remain on the first step for too long. You have to move on to the next. That is love.
What is that you want to know about relationships? It is really to see how it can be long-lasting. Isn’t it?
Three things are essential in any relationship:
1. Right perception,
2. Right observation, and
3. Right expression.
Often people say nobody understands them. Instead of saying, “No one understands me,” you can say that you have not expressed properly. If you speak Russian to a Spanish, they won’t understand definitely. Right perception can happen when you see yourself from the shoes of the other person and look at the situation.
Right perception, and then right observation. You may have perceived right but how do you react? How do you feel within yourself? Observing your own mind is the second important aspect. This observation within you: observation of sensation, observation of tendencies, observation of patterns within you is also essential.
Perception of the other; observation of oneself. and then, right expression. Expressing ourselves in the right manner.
What we learn in life
The whole life is a lesson of just these three things: perception, observation, and expression. Every mistake you make is really not a mistake; it’s a learning process of the three vital aspects of life.
Perception needs to be expanded. Don’t just see someone from outside. If someone is grumpy or a little finicky, we hold them responsible for their behaviour. But if we see from a wider perspective, many aspects will come up: that person is grumpy for some reason. That is reflecting in the relationship, widening our lens of perception. Not just accusing someone for what they did, but rather than accommodating them and seeing them at a larger picture. This will help in the relationship. This is the first secret.
Don’t just give, allow to give also
Second aspect is to give. At the same time allow others to give also.
Suppose you are doing everything but you don’t let the other person to do something in return, you are taking them away from their self-worth. Sometimes people say, “Oh! See, I did so much but still that person doesn’t love me.” Why? Because they feel uncomfortable. Love is when there is an exchange. And that can happen when you give them an opportunity to do something for you also.
This needs a little skill. We have to be skillful in making the other also contribute without demanding. The only way we know to get someone to do something for us is by demand.
This has to be done more skillfully. In a relationship, see that the other also contributes to your life so that they don’t feel completely worthless. For love to blossom, self-worth is essential. This is the second important secret.
Don’t crowd in, move back to be close
The third aspect of relationship is giving enough space. When you love someone, you don’t give them any breathing space and this can be suffocating. Suffocation destroys love. Respect each other’s space. Take some time off.
The ancient people knew this. They had this practise of sending the wives to their mother’s place for one month in a year. That one month created so much longing.
For love to blossom, there needs to be longing, and longing needs a little space. If you destroy longing, if you don’t allow longing in your relationship then love does not grow. The charm is lost.
Service is an essential ingredient for a successful relationship.
Treat love as a dessert
And the fourth aspect is that a relationship should be treated as a dessert, not as a main course. If your life is aimed at some goal, if there is some goal in your life, some aim in your life, then you move in the direction and relationship will move along. If all your focus is just on your relationship, it will not work. And it doesn’t work. You can’t have a dessert for your main course.
Have a goal in life, have an aim to do some service. Sharing and serving would enhance your ability to love, your ability to accept. And if you have that as a goal and both together move in that direction, there will be no problem.
Service is an essential ingredient for a successful relationship. And if the relationship comes from the space of giving rather than need, it is a good relationship.
Often we get bored. When you’re centered, and let go of your feverishness, you’re not bored with yourself; then your charm is long-lasting. That is the secret of being centered, being connected with the self deep within us.
Ananda once asked Buddha, “Buddha, for 40 years I’ve been watching you day and night. But what is it? I can’t get over you. Everyday you’re more charming. Every moment I see you, you’re ever new.”
That is the nature of our consciousness. Mind is not a stagnant lake; it is a flowing river, fast-flowing river. So when we float with the river, when we are in the moment—every moment—not just brood over the past or anxious about the future, we are ever new.

Guruji satsang - Forgiveness
Gurudev, How should I forgive someone who caused me a lot of harm?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar :
Why do you want to forgive someone? so that you can feel free, isn't it?Anger is punishment on us for others mistakes. We need to forgive those who harm us for our own peace of mind and not for anyone else.
If someone else has made a mistake, forgive and forget. If you have made a mistake, ask for forgiveness and move on. Don't get stuck! Feel free!
In life people do mistakes. But we can’t gallop on others' mistakes all the time. That will be our mistake. We should learn to forgive others & move forward.
Forgiving someone shows one’s compassion. Asking for forgiveness shows that you recognize your mistakes, and that you resolve not to repeat them in the future.
Now to say, ‘Only if he/she asks me for forgiveness will I forgive them’, this is of a lower form of forgiveness.
The highest form of forgiveness is to realize that the other committed a mistake out of ignorance, and having a sense of compassion for them.
Forgiving others with a sense of compassion is the best form of forgiveness. Cultivating this sense of forgiveness in oneself is a mark of being noble in character. The first to apologize is the bravest,The first to forgive is the strongest,The first to forget is the happiest! Your forgiveness should be such that the person who is being forgiven does not even know that you are forgiving them.
Lastly, remember that Forgiving is not only difficult, it is almost impossible as long as you think that someone is a culprit. But if you see that person, whomsoever you want to forgive, not as a culprit but as a victim of situations, a victim of ignorance, or just a postman to deliver what was due to you, you don’t need to forgive them. They just simply disappear from your domain.
Guruji satsang - Faith and Devotion
Faith and Devotion
~ Sri Sri
Faith is the subject of head. Devotion is the subject of heart. And meditation is of both and connects both.
A mature intellect is devoted. A mature heart is full of knowledge. And meditation matures your intellect as well as your heart.
Mr. John Pb: But people with good intellect seem to have less faith.
Sri Sri: They have more faith in the matter. Head puts the faith in the matter more and heart puts the faith in the abstract more.
It's next to impossible that one can be in total lack of faith or total lack of devotion. It's only a question of balance.
Do you have all three?
Then you are very lucky! After 8.4 million bodies, the human body is produced. From bacteria, birds, animals, etc. Then 8.4 million lives later, human life comes.Adi Shankara also said that human birth is very difficult to get. After the birth of a person, the desire to want to follow the spiritual path is also very difficult to get. Very few people understand this. And even after getting this desire to follow the spiritual path, only a few get the opportunity to do it.Because these people don't get access to knowledge. This knowledge is not available to everyone who seeks to follow the spiritual path. You can pray, meditate....Their prayers reach the goal and people receive some blessings.
Blessings come to everyone, no doubt, but Knowledge, the right path and liberation remain a distant dream for them. They are sitting hoping that one day they will go to heaven. These souls are trapped in desire and fear. It is important to have a spiritual teacher who will open up Knowledge. So,
1. birth of a human,
2. aspiration to follow the spiritual path and
3. accessible path (Maha Purusha Sannidho - receiving a Spiritual Teacher).
These three things are rare and difficult to reach.
If you have all three, you are very lucky.

Guruji satsang - crossing the ocean of Maya
Crossing The Ocean Of Maya
That company which gets you lost, which doesn't let you learn from your own experience, is bad company. You can gallop on such a horse forever without being aware of anything in your life. That is how people commit the same mistake over and over again and get totally dejected and depressed their whole life - and they do not even know that they are miserable.
They are no doubt miserable and they make everyone around them miserable, isn’t that so? That is bad company. They forget all about themselves. There is no memory of them left, of who they are, what they are, what they want, where they are heading. They have no idea who they were, how they were.
All adults forget that they were teenagers once, and that they, too, had problems as teenagers. When they have teenage children, they think the children are not doing well. Every adult feels that the children don't listen - they forget that they, also, did not listen to their parents at a particular time.
When the delusion comes, the memory loss happens. You lose your memory, you lose the knowledge of who you are. The intellect becomes clouded. When the intellect is hazy, not clear, not sharp, everything appears wrong. It is the intellect, the buddhi, that says, “This is good, this is not good; this is right, this is not right.” That which is, that which brings short-term joy and longterm misery is bad.
That which brings longterm joy and short-term misery is good. This is the definition of good and bad. Good brings long-term joy and short-term challenges, problems, and bad is something that brings long-term problems and short-term joy. It is the intellect which decides whether this is good or not good, and when the intellect, itself, is gone, everything is lost.
When the discrimination power in you is lost, then you are totally lost. This is what you will find if you go and talk to prisoners in jail. At the spur of the moment they lost their intellect and they lost everything. All crimes can only happen when the intellect or the discrimination is lost, and most of them lose it through bad company. That is why mobs create more violence.
The individual person cannot do so much harm-in a mob they throw stones, put fire to buses and trucks and break things. The mob becomes more violent than a single individual person. It is the mob psychology-a mob is more violent because they lose their intellect, they lose their discrimination. That is why bad company is to be shunned.
Good company is that which cheers you up, which elevates you, which brings a pleasant attitude and feeling within you. In the beginning it may be just like a small wave, a ripple, but when you are associating yourself with bad company continuously, it will become like an ocean. Don't think, “Oh, it is just one party there, just one little thing that I’m doing.”
No, that one little thing can just rip you. That is how alcoholics who have recovered from being an alcoholic get sucked back into it. It is just one party, one peg-these sort of justification they give, they go for one little party once in a while and then that’s it, finished. And they end up again entering the rehabilitation centre.

Guruji satsang - obsession
Obsession with sex, food, clothes or music, television or sightseeing, or anything, will only drain you of your precious energy. Are you getting what I am saying? Thinking about it constantly obsession is not letting go, is coming back to the source. This is one method.
See, the objects of senses create an attraction in you, and if you immediately gallop on your attractions, that attraction does not bring fulfillment, it dies out and leaves you in a state of inertia. Any one sense, if you use it too much, will only cause inertia, dullness.
If you are listening to music from morning to night, your brain will become one sided-only your left brain will function, the right brain will not function. You cannot think, logic dies out. You cannot perceive things properly. Your observation, your expression, everything suffers.
And it is the same way with all other senses. If you are using any one sense too much, that particular sense becomes dull and ineffective. Moderation is required. And moderation can come when you retire back to the self. Get back to the source that you are.
The word bhajan means sharing. Sharing what? Sharing that which the Divine is. The Divine is peace and you are peace, you share that peace with the Divine. What is it that we can all share together? That is one sound. See, when we sing the same song or same sound, it resonates in the mind, but when we are thinking, each one will think differently.
That is why singing is called Bhajan, because you can very easily share that with everybody. That same sound, Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya everyone is singing. That is in every mind, in every consciousness. So if everyone is laughing, that is also Bhajan. Don't think that just singing is Bhajan.
Everyone together just laugh, laugh your head off-really laughing, rolling on the floor. That is Bhajan, too. Avyavrat bhajanat constantly share all that you have, not that one day you do bhajans, one day you share, other days you don't.
Have a sense of one-ness with everything-share yourself with the trees, the mountains, the sky , with people, with animals. Sharing your life is bhajan. Uninterrupted sharing of all that you are. Also, in the world, praise the divine.
Sing the glory of the divine in your day to day activity. In your daily activity, in your normal life, in your social life. Talking about the qualities of the divine, the glory of the Divine, shravana - listening about it, hearing about it.

Guruji satsang - Importance of Guru
IMPORTANCE OF THE GURU
You should not see any difference between God, Guru and your soul. Despite knowing this, in our country, whenever we start any good work or do any Puja, the first thing that we chant is “Sri Gurubhyo Namaha, Hari Om!”
One cannot truly worship God without first honouring and worshipping the Guru. This is how the tradition has been since the ages.
Do you know how the Vedic mantras are chanted? Even before we start the chanting, we first recite, “Sri Gurubhyo Namaha, Hari Om!” Only after properly honouring the Guru and Lord Ganesha can one proceed to start anything. The Guru comes even before Lord Ganapati. Lord Ganapati is worshipped before all the other deities at the start of any ritual. But even before one can worship Lord Ganapati, one has to remember the Guru with honour and devotion. This is how the tradition has been woven in our culture since time immemorial. After this comes Atma Puja, which is honouring the divinity within. It means to deeply remember that the divine dwells within oneself. Remembering that all the divine gods and goddesses reside within you is to be in a truly meditative state. Meditation is the pinnacle or the ultimate state of any Puja. After honouring the Guru and the various deities, you should sit in a meditative state. And after that, take your attention to different parts of the body and remember that all gods and goddesses reside in different parts of the body. Then you can go deep into meditation and experience the joy within.

Guruji satsang - laughter
Gurudev, there is a proverb that says that laughter is the best medicine. Can you explain the importance of laughter in our life?
Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar :
When you start your day with laughter and love, your life is divinely animated. The true prayer is to laugh in the morning from outside and from the depths.
Laughter comes from the center of our Being, from the center of our heart. Our stomach is so full of laughter that laughter permeates every cell in our body. True laughter is true prayer. When things are going well, everyone can laugh, but when everything falls apart and yet you laugh, that is evolution and growth. Nothing in life is more worthy than your laugh. Never lose it. Events come and go. Some are nice and some are unpleasant. There is an area deep within you that is not touched. Hold on to what is intact. Then you can keep laughing.
Sometimes you laugh just to not think or to not look at you. But when you see and feel inside that life is present and intense in every moment, nothing can disturb or touch you. That laugh is real. You may have observed six-month-old or one-year-old babies. When they laugh, their whole body jumps and bounces. Every cell in the body laughs. That is enlightenment. That laugh is innocent, pure, uninhibited.
Opinions are the impressions we make on our mind. If we have an experience repeated four or five times, then for the rest of our lives, we tend to see life through those same experiences. We need to be able to see things as they are. When the essence of life blooms from within, there is true laughter akin to pity. Laughter opens us, opens the heart.

Guruji satsang - fasting
Gurudev, does God get pleased if we fast? Is there any specific reason why fasting is suggested during different festivals across religions around the world?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar :
We fast not to please the Divine, but to cleanse our body. You overwork your liver, stomach and pancreas so much. If there was a labor court for the body, all these organs would have complained against you in that court. We don’t allow them to rest at all. We drink and eat the whole day until night, and we overwork our system. They do need some rest and for that you need to fast.
God is not going to be pleased by your fasting. It is more to detox your own body.
And why fasting is combined with prayer all over the world and in all religions, is because when you are fasting, you are detoxified and your prayer becomes authentic and deep. Your meditation happens best when your stomach is empty. Isn’t that your experience?
If you meditate on a full stomach, you will fall asleep. That is why it is said, you can say your prayers when you are fasting as your body is detoxified and your mind is rested and alert.
Just think of your own classrooms. In which period do you feel very alert? First few sessions, or just before lunch. If you have had a heavy breakfast the first session can be boring. And when do you feel heavy and dull? Right after lunch!
When I was in college, I also used to sit and sleep because I had had some nice food, and that too with yogurt. At that time, classes are like a burden. Nobody taught us in those days that food has an impact on our mind. Nobody taught us not to eat these particular things during the day.
Our fasting has an impact on our alertness, and our mind that is why in all the religions of the world, be it Islam, Christianity, Hinduism or Jainism, fasting has been followed. But it is only for the body and not to please God.

Guruji satsang - purpose of Guru or Master
"The Master is a doorway. When you are out in the street in hot sun or stuck in rain and thunder, you feel the need for a shelter. Once you enter the door, the world looks so much more beautiful; it is a place filled with love, joy, cooperation, compassion and all virtues. Looking through the doorway there is no fear. From inside your home, you can look at the thunder, at the storm and yet be relaxed as you are in the shelter. Such a sense of security, fullness and joy comes. That is the purpose of having a Master."

Guruji satsang - Gita - stuck in feverish
Q: Gurudev, in the Bhagavad Gita Lord Krishna says, “Sarva-sankalpa parityagi”. What does it mean?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:
When you are about to go to sleep, and if you keep thinking “I have to do this, I have to do that”, then will you be able to get restful sleep? What do you do when you sleep? You keep everything aside. Only then will you are able to get sleep. There is a deeper meaning in this verse. Yoga will not happen until the mind is stuck in feverish thoughts like 'I want this' or 'I have to do this' or 'I need to do that'.
How can you find deep rest when your mind is running behind acquiring 20 different things? Can you get any comfort in such a state? So for some time, you need to set everything aside. This is what is meant by the term “Sarva-sankalpa Sanyasi”.
'Yada hi nendriyartheshu na karmasv-anusajjate. Sarva-sankalpa-sanyasi yogarudastadochyate' (Bhagavad Gita, 6.4)
When one reaches a stage where he desires nothing for himself, then he becomes a Yogi, a Sanyasi. Such a wise and selfless person becomes useful to everyone around him. Whom do you really call a saint, a prophet, or an apostle? One who does not desire anything for himself, and one who only prays and works for the welfare and wellbeing of everyone else. Often one desires fame, or money, etc. It is desire that destroys a person and makes his vision and perspective in life very narrow and limited. So Lord Krishna says that until and unless a person drops all this (feverishness of desire) and becomes hollow and empty, he does not find peace. Once the mind becomes hollow and empty, one experiences such deep rest, and at the same time such deep joy arises from within. In such a state, one realizes the light of the Divine within and all around. This is what is meant here.
~Sri Sri
Guruji satsang - uncertainty
Gurudev, How can one remain calm and natural when things are not going the way we wish for them to happen?
Gurudev Sri Sri -
Being natural means accepting yourself, others and everything around you as it is. Not as a burden but with a sense of understanding that this is how it is. When you think or feel that this shouldn’t be like this or this should have been like that then you come in touch with your boundaries – The boundaries of not being natural and comfortable.
Every time you are unhappy or miserable, you are just coming in touch with your own boundaries! Boundary is the real cause of your disturbance as it brings limitation. Have you observed that you are peaceful, happy and calm as long as you have not come in contact with your boundaries? The moment you come in contact with it, then the mind goes on a trip and you move out of your centre. At that moment you can just be grateful and pray for peace. Just turn the whole situation into a prayer. Pray that there be peace, not just in you but in everybody. That very moment you will start smiling. However hopeless the situation is, you will walk through it, sing through it, dance through it!
Whenever a boundary is broken, it creates some fear. The fear creates dislike. This dislike puts you back in the boundary. And to keep yourselves in the boundary you put forth defenses. When you try to defend your position, it is such a stress. Every time you try to defend your position, it makes you more and weaker. Drop all your defenses. When you are totally defenseless, that’s when you’ll be strong.
Guruji satsang - wisdom
ROLE OF WISDOM IN LIFE !
It is wisdom that blows the Events out of your Mind, and helps you flow with Time.
Imagine there is a river in which there are boulders and little puddles. Water gets stuck in those little puddles, and then what happens? It starts having fungus, algae, and the water is not clean, pure, or fresh anymore. This is because it is stagnating in one place. When the river is flowing (when you let go of the past), the water (Mind) is clean and pure; the water moves over all those boulders and runs to the ocean. The Mind is also like that – it gets stuck in a few events. It cannot get stuck for too long; somewhere, it has to move on, right? Be it pleasant or unpleasant. And wisdom helps you to move with Time and through Time.

Guruji satsang - sacrifice
Gurudev, what is the meaning of sacrifice? When can we consider that we have sacrificed something?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:
Let us understand what sacrifice means. You like something and you want to have it, but for something better to happen for everyone else, you give that up. That is called sacrifice.
You wanted to go for a picnic or a movie, but then you were needed to do some work somewhere else, which would benefit others. So you give up your pleasure trip, and do what is good for the people. That is what sacrifice is.
Where there is love, there is no sacrifice needed. You don’t say, mother sacrificed going on a trip because the child was not well. The child’s well being is of utmost importance for the mother, so she did not sacrifice anything. Do you see what I’m saying?
It is when you strongly desire something and give it up because it can bring a lot of good to others, then it is considered as a sacrifice.
You cannot think, ‘I am doing good work, but why are people criticizing me?’ It is their nature.
If a flower asks a thorn ‘Why do you prick?’. The thorn will answer ‘It’s my nature!’
The world has both thorns and flowers. The nature of the thorn is to prick and the nature of the flower is to spread fragrance.

Jai Gurudev!!
"Spirituality brings luck and strength, and so through meditation, you will become much more successful in the world."
- Sri Sri
Jai Gurudev!
I was already teaching meditation and yoga .But I felt there was something that was lacking. Though people do their spiritualpractices ,their life is in a sort of a compartment. They do their prayer ,meditation and spiritual practices but when they come out in life, they are very different people.
So, I was thinking how we can bridge this gap - between inner silence and outer expression of life. During a period of silence ,the Sudarshan kriya came like an inspiration .After I came out of the silence, I started teaching whatever i knew and people had great experiences.
After kriya ,many people feel so pure and so clear, so complete because the consciousness ,which was stuck in the matter ,material, which is foreign to itself, got released from that and came back to its home. That is the sense of purity , feeling of purity .

Guruji satsang - success mantra
Guruji, What success mantraa must any person follow to become the best in his/her profession?
Gurudev Sri Sri -
To excel in your profession balance your life. Meditate every day, sleep well, and in the morning do pranayam and meditation and go to work with a fresh mind. Don’t watch too many movies and not more than one hour of television per day. A movie a week should be enough. This is because when our mind is bombarded with so many impressions, it loses its creative abilities and becomes uncreative. Spend one hour with people. Spend time with somebody whom you do not know.
Waking up from the dream of maya: Suppose the past has gone - right now - can you wake up from the dream? This is all ‘maya’, all that happens, nothing stays, this is all maya. The clouds come in the sky and then go away, bubbles in the water and waves in the ocean stay a little while and then vanish. You are just the blue sky. Wake up. Can you wake up from the dream of maya? Can you tag all of this as maya, including me sitting here? When you can, then an awareness dawns inside you and wakes you up - ‘I’m ever pure’ - that’s the calling. It only takes seconds for you to wake up. Discard everything - just shake your head and discard everything.
